Three Decades of Innovation: Bill Doran on Cochran's Past, Present, and Future

November 2024

Bill Doran has been a central figure at Cochran for over three decades, guiding the company’s growth from a regional electrical contractor to a leader in the technology and construction industries. Since joining the company in 1986 as an estimator, Bill has watched the landscape of Seattle and the broader industry evolve. Cochran has remained at the forefront, continuously pushing the boundaries of innovation and excellence. Reflecting on his early days at Cochran, Bill recalls the pivotal moments that helped shape the company’s direction.

“When I started, Cochran was heavily involved in electrical work, but we saw an opportunity in structured cabling, even in its early days,” Bill says. Recognizing the potential for technology to play a critical role, Cochran expanded its services beyond traditional electrical work, eventually becoming a leader in installing advanced security, audio-visual, and data systems. “I said in 2005 that technology would be as big, if not bigger, than electrical for us, and that’s exactly what is happening.”

“I said back in 2005 that technology would be as big, if not bigger than electrical for us, and that’s exactly what is happening.”

Over the years, Cochran has built long-standing relationships with some of the world’s most innovative companies. From constructing data centers and labs to developing cutting-edge war rooms, Cochran has proven itself as a trusted partner, willing to tackle complex and high-stakes projects. “Our clients come to us because they know we’ll get the job done, even when it’s something that’s never been done before,” Bill explains. “We’re problem solvers, and that’s what sets us apart.”

Looking toward the future, Bill emphasizes the importance of maintaining Cochran’s core values—trust, integrity, and professionalism. “As we continue to grow, it’s vital that the next generation of leaders uphold the legacy we’ve built. It’s about doing what we say we’ll do and staying true to our word.”
